The steady growth we have enjoyed over the past few years has enabled our chemistry laboratory to purchase three new instruments, as follows:
These three state of the art instruments will enable our chemistry laboratory to continue providing the highest quality data possible while at the same time reducing our detection limits and turnaround times, and ultimately, providing better service to our valued clients.
For a detailed description of each, please click on the instrument of interest.

ELAN 9000 ICP-MS
ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) holds a unique position in analysis of environmental samples by virtue of its speed, sensitivity, dynamic range, and elemental coverage.
Over sixty elements can be quantitatively measured, including alkali and alkaline earth elements, transition and other metals, rare earth elements, most of the halogens, and even some of the non-metals.
Detection limits are very low and typically range from sub ng/l to parts per trillion (ppt). Interferences are also minimized in that each element has a unique mass.
With the high speed quadruple analyzer, measurement of a full suite of elements takes only about five minutes per sample (after calibration and method-specified QC, of course!)
In addition, this technique allows for a wide analytical working range, which can range up to nine orders of magnitude in a single analysis.
Please call us to discuss how this technology can help your company!

Hach IL500 TOC-TN
This automated total organic carbon system contains dual detectors to allow for a wide range of concentrations. The range at the present time goes from 100 ppb to over 30,000 ppm. It allows for DOC (dissolved organic carbon) analysis as well.
Matrices include drinking water, surface water, ground water, wastewater, wastewaters with particulate matter, as well as solids. Aqueous analyses are automated, allowing for analyses in the evening hours (after calibration and method-mandated QC, of course!), which serves to reduce our turnaround times. All aqueous analyses are performed in duplicate at a minimum, providing the highest quality results. Analyses can also be performed in quadruplicate at the request of the client.
A high temperature combustion furnace has also been installed, allowing analysis of soils, sludge, and other solids of interest. The solids module digests solids at 1200 degrees C without a catalyst. In fact, NEL just successfully completed a project in Maine that required the analysis and reporting of over 500 solids in a three week time period!
Please call us to discuss all your TOC needs!

Lachat Quikchem 8500
This flow injection analysis system features high sample output with rapid method changes. Rapid analysis times (typically 20-60 seconds) allow for real time data with the ability to monitor and control the analysis. Typically the Quikchem can analyze 60 – 120 samples per hour.
The Quikchem can determine ionic species in a variety of sample types from sub-ppb to percent concentrations. Matrices include drinking water, surface water, ground water, and wastewater, as well as solids. The Quikchem is capable of performing over 400 methods, including USEPA accepted methods.
Our system also includes an autodilutor, which will minimize the small errors that may be introduced when a chemist performs a manual dilution.
NEL plans to automate many methods on this four channel instrument, including nitrate, nitrite, ammonia nitrogen, chloride, sulfate, fluoride, bromide, iodide, hexavalent chromium, phenols, formaldehyde, methanol, cyanide, orthophosphate, total phosphorus, sulfide, TKN, alkalinity, acidity, pH, conductivity, surfactants, color, COD, and turbidity.
This automation will continue to provide data of the highest quality, as well as decrease our already impressive turn-around times.
Please call our chemistry laboratory should you have any questions or desire more information on this exciting new instrument. Our experienced chemists are standing by to assist with your wish-list-the more challenging the better!
